It was announced on the news this morning that the United States Government's debt has surpassed its own self imposed limit of fourteen trillion dollars--that is a 14 followed by twelve zeros($14,000,000,000,000). Congress will now consider a measure to increase the Federal debt limit. One has to wonder just how much debt the government is willing to impose on its citizens. Spending on military invasions and gifts to the corporate profiteers who have already ripped off the American people for every penny they have, has finally bankrupted our government. There is one possibly positive aspect to this conundrum: Maybe now these fools will stop their indiscriminate spending and go home to their families (Yeah, right!). I'm not going to hold my breath for that one.

The other big story in the news today was about a man who consumed his twenty-five thousandth (25,000th) Big-Mac: He actually saved his receipts and hamburger boxes in his basement. Also, Arnold Schwarzenegger admitted to fathering a child with one of his household staffers.

Meanwhile, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods and other disasters are increasing in frequency and ferocity due to a global failure to manage our resources and waste. Oil spills, nuclear meltdowns, war and other ecological disasters continue to ravage our planet; unemployment has left thousands of young men and women with nothing to do. But instead of rioting in the streets, Americans are more concerned with such superficial events as the recent "Royal Wedding" and the private life of Charlie Sheen. We may be facing the end of civilization as we know it and all we see in the news is superficial crap! If this was France or Algeria, people would be rioting in the streets, but perhaps due to an abundance of anti-depressants Americans don't seem to care what is going on--as long as we have our Big Macs and can watch celebrity news on television we pay no attention to the fact that most of us may be dead within the next ten years. Wake up America! The world ends tomorrow and you may die!

And they told them when to sell before they tanked the real estate market as well, timing all based on the level of confidence they wanted each to understand.
The victims may cry "Why would this happen to me." but their behavior in a prior life would answer this:::It didin't happen to anyone who didn't deserve it.

Both the public and the private sector host $400k overpaid employees. The difference?
The public sector preyed upon the disfavored rejects from motherlands, people too disfavored to stay reproducing with their own blood and enjoying their own culture. Corporate preyed upon the more favored purebloods from their motherland through sourcing. Yet another great example of the god's "reverse positioning".

They point the finger at me and claim I participate by shopping at WalMart.
Now this is something I have yet to understand, for they ALL engage in this sourcing due to cheap Asian labor. And Walmart has a very straightforward business model, although not as clear as Costco's "14%", rest assured I pay a margin on each and every product I purchase at Walmart independantly, including my $3 box of American made Cherios and my 68 cent can of Campbell's tomato soup.
INCIDENTALLY, it seems to me we pay THE SAME PRICE FOR SHIT THAT WE DID BEFORE SOURCING BEGAN. The difference is being poicketed by corporate and the $400k employees who are recruited into playing a part in this evil.
The gods intentionally set this up to ensure the onus falls upon the preditory capitalist and not the ignorant public.

Constitutional interpretation wasn't difficult until we started trying to control substances. No one has the right to tell anybody else what they can or can't put into their own body. This kind of freedom has its roots in The Declaration of Independence (which has no influence on U.S. Law for some strange reason) and several of the amendments to the constitution known as The Bill Of Rights, which limits the governments ability to intrude into people's lives (but for some reason has been largely ignored for the past 100 years).

Freedom of religion was one of the main principles upon which this country was founded, and along with that the freedom to practice one's religion with the use of certain substances which allow one to commune with God. The sacred South American herb, Ayahuasca has been know to heal people from physical as well as mental ailments and many people who have used it say it has opened their minds in many ways.

The arrest of Taita Juan Agreda Chindoy, by U.S. customs officials is, in my opinion, an affront to the freedoms held most dear to America, and an attack on the most basic of human freedoms.

TAXES, WELFARE, UNEMPLOYMENT AND DRUGS

I get tired of right-wing, conservatives always complaining how their taxes go to helping the "lazy, immoral, and/or stupid drug using" people on welfare.

First, that portion of federal tax dollars that actually go to welfare is so small that the government would not save much by excluding the tiny portion of people who could be excluded for drug-use. Over 75% of all federal tax dollars go to the military for blowing stuff up--if that money was used to build schools and hospitals, we probably wouldn't have anyone out of work.

Second, people who have lost their jobs due to involvement with drugs are already precluded from collecting unemployment, whether that makes sense or not.

Third, people who collect unemployment have already had money taken out of their paychecks to cover the premiums for unemployment insurance.

Fourth, all of these people on welfare which the small-minded author suspects of sitting around doing drugs instead of looking for work, are also tax-payers.

Fifth, urinalysis is useful for screening some drugs such as marijuana, which stay in the system for at least thirty days. However, other even more destructive drugs, such as cocaine, speed, and alcohol, pass through the system much faster and are therefore harder to detect. Would our unhappy, tax-paying author prefer to have only cocaine addicts on welfare and let the pot-heads die?

In the seventies the conservative position was that global warming was a myth; in the nineties they started to grudgingly agree that it was a possibility, but refused to acknowledge that the problem was caused by human activities; now, near the end of 2010, only the least evolved of conservatives will deny that global warming is real and at least partly caused by human co2 emissions. Unfortunately, it appears that now it is too late. By the time the world can react to this crisis, the point of no return will likely be past and it will be anybody's guess whether our race survives.

Genesis is a great story, rich in its symbology and "moral" message. But giving it any kind of time in the classroom is, in my humble opinion, counter to the First Amendment to the Constitution and a departure from the clear reason required in education. And in fact, science has already answered the whole Creationism v. Science debate. Quantum mechanics has taught us that particles are commonly created out of nothing through a process called "quantum fluctuation." This is no longer a theory, it has been observed repeatedly by many different researchers. Apparently, our own Universe began as one of these random quantum fluctuations.

So there you have it folks, if God exists, it was created at the same time as everything else in our universe. My apologies to those creationists our there.

SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS CHALLENGE TO CHICAGO HAND-GUN BAN

The United States Supreme Court has issued its ruling in the challenge to Chicago's proposed ban on handguns. The ruling allows people to keep handguns in their homes as a means of self-defense. This is a little surprising, considering the Supreme Court's recent decisions supporting the power of the state against the rights of the individual. Here is an Al Jazeera report on the ruling:

As overpopulation and global mismanagement of the Earth's resources lead to increases in natural disasters, disease, poverty, war, and social unrest is expected to rise everywhere. It is predicted that as the scores of impoverished and desperate masses become more and more frustrated, the need for personal protection will continue to grow. I am angry at the fools who have been in control of virtually all of the Earth's resources for the last two-thousand years.

I am angry because there is a giant, toxic, black spot of oil, spreading its way across the Gulf Of Mexico. I am angry because there is a an island of plastic floating around, somewhere out in the Pacific Ocean. I am angry because the air in our cities is poisonous, and so are our rivers. I am angry because the "humans" continued their foolish practices of polluting the planet, despite repeated warnings by my people about the ice around the poles melting...and they still do.

I am angry at the world's leaders, who can do nothing but strut around like peacocks, bickering over the few remaining scraps of planetary resources while their people perish...they send children off to die in their senseless war games as they fatten themselves with their pillages. I am angry at the clergy, for their failure to act purely and for their greed...they make war in the name of God, and line their pockets with money from the poor and the faithful. I am angry at the wealthy; some for their naivete, and others because they are truly evil. I am angry at the poor; some for their complacency, and others because they are truly stupid.

I am angry because there are homeless people everywhere I look, while at the same time, huge, empty, corporate-owned office-buildings with controlled environments, hum along day and night, with only a lonely janitor or security-guard to occupy them.

I am angry at the professional world...I used to believe that hard work and loyalty would be rewarded, but no longer. I am angry with myself for my continuing participation in this rat race; I know better, and I only fall deeper into debt every day that I do. I am angry because my temporary position pays me less than my unemployment (which didn't give me enough to survive in the first place). I am angry because I have to drive to my assignment alone everyday with 100,000 other people, all jam-packed, bumper to bumper in our cars at 8:00 in the morning.

Most of all, I am angry because there is nothing I can do to change this hopeless situation, and although I know that many people care, there is nothing they can do to change it either. All we can do is run around madly like rats on a sinking ship, somehow instinctively sensing our doom, yet still looking for a way to higher ground...

Israel has attacked peaceful protest ships engaged in a humanitarian aid mission. This outrageous attack happened on the high seas in international waters.

Apparently, nine (9) people have been killed by the Israeli stormtroopers; an unknown number of people have been wounded. One woman is reported to have lost her left eye. It was early in the morning in Gaza when high speed attack boats and helicopters swooped in. It is reported that commandos in riot gear boarded the ship or ships after a barrage of sound-bombs, tear-gas, and explosions. The Israeli government has released edited video clips showing men in black riot-gear, attacking the occupants of a ship with batons, guns and other weapons. The above video came from Al Jazeera.

This attack appears to have been done with total disregard for international law. There was no possible threat from the peaceful protesters on the high seas, yet they were boarded and attacked. With the support and assistance of the United States, Israel has been subjugating and holding the Palistinian people in a virtual prison for many years now. There is little doubt that this act of piracy by the Israeli government will infuriate and inflame an already distrustful Muslim world.

If this wasn't such a serious crime against humanity, it would be laughable that Israel stole the demonstrators recording equipment along with all of their other media devices such as cell-phone camera's etc, and then released a heavily edited video on Youtube. Here it is!

Responding to Arizona's passing of a controversial law designed to combat illegal immigration, last night San Francisco's City Council voted unanimously to boycott Arizona. The City of San Francisco will not only stop purchasing products from Arizona, they are reviewing and severing existing contracts as well.

Arizona's Governor responded by saying, "I don't know why they are sticking their nose in our business...they have a lot of problems in California."

Arizona's law is designed to give police officers the power to stop and question anyone they "reasonably" suspect to be an illegal alien. Critics say the new law is unconstitutional because is encourages racial profiling by law enforcement officials.

On the subject of global warming, there is something no one has been talking about which I feel is very important to point out:

When sunlight hits the Earth, some of it is reflected back out into space by the atmosphere, and some of it is reflected by those parts of the earth which are covered with ice. As the ice which covers the North Sea retreats further and further, less light and heat is reflected out into space and more and more is absorbed by the dense waters of the ocean. An interesting property of matter is that the denser it is, the better it stores energy (heat). Because water is denser than land, it stores the heat from the Sun very efficiently--if you think it was hot in your hometown last summer, just imagine what it is going to be like after the arctic zones have thawed out! There is a very real possibility that things could get so hot that our oceans and atmosphere could start evaporating away into space. Scientists knew about this when I was a kid back in the nineteen seventies--people talked about it all the time, but no one thought it would happen so fast! "Don't worry" they said when I asked the grownups, "It will be hundreds or thousands of years from now."

Now, there is a very real possibility that we will see our poles thaw out within the next fifteen to twenty-five years. I have heard many predictions by the "experts," but in my opinion, it could already be too late to do anything about it. As the ice caps melt and the oceans rise; volcanoes become more active and earthquakes more frequent; floods, tornadoes, and hurricanes grow in number and size; usable land will become harder and harder to find. As food and water become more and more scarce, the wealthier classes will begin to fortify their homes, installing home-defense systems and purchasing powerful weapons. Overpopulated coastal urban areas will begin to see bands of roving bandits. Young men without jobs or hope, desperate to survive at whatever cost--if you think you have a problem with crime in your hometown now, just wait a few years! If things continue the way they have been, things are going to get a lot worse.

People talk almost casually about losing the ice around the poles. I actually heard some jerk in the bar the other day saying, "What do I care if the Polar Bears die?" I guess this is the kind of ignorance which has led to the situation we are in....people need to understand that all life on this planet is interconnected--when we lose a species off this planet, we lose part of what made us human. We will never know how many resources we have lost through our destruction of thousands of species of plants and animals, or how much of our own spirit we have destroyed...

Some say it won't do any good to speak of doom and gloom--that I am only contributing to our problems with such negative talk, but I will continue to spread the word! Please, share this article with as many people as you can and do what you can to make people wake up to this extremely urgent message!

United States Supporting Brutal Dictators?

As a child I was taught to believe that I was growing up in the greatest country in the world. I taught that in the United States, individual freedom was protected and cherished. I watched old World War II movies and drank in the traditional ideals woven into their stories: Strong men who believed in what they were doing, fighting against the evil, expansionist, totalitarian governments of dictatorial and communist nations.

As I grew up, I was surprised to discover that in fact, the United States is guilty of installing and supporting fascist dictators all over the world--as long as they are willing to "play ball" with American businesses. The ideals of a foreign leader or government do not appear to be important when it comes to our foreign policy, just as long as their policies are favorable to "American interests".

This short Youtube clip explains my point fairly well. I also recommend doing some research on the School of the Americas, which has recently been renamed the Western Hemisphere Institute For Security Cooperation. Many of the schools graduates have been accused of war-crimes for their activities in foreign countries.

Obama Opens Offshore Oil-Drilling

It is my prediction that 25 years from now only the military and the very rich will possess and use gasoline.

I guess it is fitting then, that President Obama should announce the resolution to open offshore oil drilling at Andrews Naval Air Base in Washington. Since it will take about ten years to get the proposed platforms operational, this move will not significantly effect gas prices for US consumers. In my opinion it is more of a gift to the Pentagon from a President who wants to improve his popularity with military personnel.

Once again we see that there is little difference between Democrats and Republicans. Both parties have been ripping off the American People and the rest of the world for generations. The impending energy crisis is nothing new. Liberals saw this coming back in the seventies, and conservatives tried to ignore their warnings like ostriches with their heads stuck in the sand.

It is high time we stop pretending our problems will just go away if we ignore them. From the condition of things here on Earth, it is clear that things have been managed poorly. Let us stop wasting our precious irreplaceable resources,and killing ourselves in the process. We must start cleaning up our mess now. It may already be too late!

Because I live in very blue voting district for the first time in my life I had the luxury of "voting my conscience," instead of voting for "the lesser of two evils." I voted for the Green Party candidate, not because I thought she would make a great president, but because I really agree with the Green Party agenda and I wanted to send a message to the Democrats. Mitt Romney harshly criticized President Obama's actions since he has taken office in a speech today on C-SPAN .

I'm getting tired of hearing Republicans complain about all of the things the President is doing to reverse the damage of eight years of Republican failure. While Bush was in office, he had the luxury of a Republican congress that gave him anything he asked for. Without any Democratic restraint he managed to spend every dime of the huge surplus that was left in the treasury when Clinton left office and put the country deeply into debt with the rest of world.

The answer to the country's financial problems is really simple: Stop spending $3 Billion per month blowing stuff up half-way around the world! Over three-quarters of our national budget goes to the military! This money should be spent at home, building schools, bridges, and hospitals; it should be spent on building housing and giving food to our poor; we should be investing in a space program! Instead, Mr. Romney speaks about building up our military even more! He wants to pump up our troop levels!

Listen, the Republicans had their chance and clearly failed miserably with their warlike policies. The result of their failure has been pain and suffering all over the world, including here at home.

The next time you hear some near-sighted republican complaining about Obama, do me and the rest of the world a favor and remind them that it was their policies which got us into this mess in the first place!
By now it is clear that republicans only care about their stock funds and protecting their wealth. They make their money from the blood and sweat of the poor and human suffering appears to mean nothing to them.

Assemblywoman Fiona Ma Hopes She "Won't See War In Her Lifetime..."

Assemblywoman, Fiona Ma, Representing California's 12th Assembly District was in attendance at the installation of a Veteran's flag pole in front of City Hall today. There was much beating of war drums and general military pomp. I was dumbfounded when, while being interviewed on live television, Assemblywoman Ma said, "I hope that we won't see war in my lifetime...[but I feel it is likely that I will]."

I would like to be the first to point out to the Assemblywoman that we are at war right now and have been in a constant state of war ever since the beginning of the Korean Conflict. I am shocked that an elected official of her stature would make such an outrageous and simple-minded statement. The right to bear arms will undergo a trial by the Supreme Court, beginning today.

The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution is that part of the Bill of Rights which protects the individual right to keep and bear arms. According to the American Bar Association, there has been more disagreement on how to interpret the Second Amendment than any other part of the Constitution. Because there are supporters and detractors of the right to bear arms on both the right and the left, this battle will not be decided today. Other cases where the Supreme Court has sought to interpret the Second Amendment include: United States v. Cruikshank (1875), Presser v. Illinois (1886), Miller v. Texas (1894), Robertson v. Baldwin (1897), United States v. Miller (1939), and District of Columbia v. Heller (2008).

Personally, I don't want cops and criminals to be the only people with guns. I believe the intent of the framers of the Second Amendment was to prevent the Government from oppressing the American people through force and give the people a means to protect themselves against unreasonable government intrusion into their personal freedoms.

In light of the Supreme Court's recent decision to remove limits on Corporate political campaign contributions (effectively putting the US Government into the hands of private industry), I suspect the Court will betray the American people again and enforce the proposed weapons ban.

San Francisco Considers Law To Target Homeless And Poor

The City of San Francisco is considering a "sit-lie" law which would make criminals out of anyone who sits or lies on the sidewalks. This is inhumane legislation targeting homeless and poverty stricken people who have nowhere else to go. Of course police groups are in favor of the proposed law, because it will give them another excuse to search people for drugs and/or go on "fishing expeditions" to see if they can find some other reason to arrest them.

This really upsets me. It is the same wherever you go--new laws designed to restrict the freedom of the individual and secure the power of a police state are being drawn up in small rooms with little natural light. Where is a homeless person supposed to go if they can’t even sleep on the sidewalk? Will this new law effect other citizens who maybe just need a rest or are experiencing a medical emergency? Will the police profile and target only people who "appear" to be homeless and poor, or people who just dress a certain way?

It is already miserable to be homeless—it shouldn't be illegal too. Contrary to popular belief, most homeless did not become so out of choice and not because they are lazy, stupid, or immoral. Former Timothy Geithner Testifies On Wall Street Bail Out

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner testified at a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing on Wednesday on the bailout of the giant insurance company, AIG. It was great to finally see someone having to answer some questions about what, in my opinion, was the biggest rip off of the American people since the inception of the Federal Reserve Bank.

At one point during the hearing, after a particularly tense round of questioning, Mr. Geithner made a great effort to appear indignant, saying to one of his questioners, "....you are suggesting that we weren't acting in the public's interest...!"

Pretty comical, Mr. Geithner! Of course he knows that is the reason for the hearings in the first place.

"Support Our Troops." Used early in the invasion and occupation of Iraq as a counter to the growing anti-war movement, this patriotic slogan has since undergone a metamorphosis. As the scores of injured and mentally disturbed soldiers return from the battle fields to their home-towns and try to re-integrate into society, their friends and families are learning that no amount of support can ever heal the psychological wounds that soldiers suffer.

Although I have respect for people who put themselves in harm’s way to protect others, I believe heroism should be associated with a just cause. The illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq has caused such widespread destruction that any glory claimed from taking part in cleaning up the mess, should be carefully examined. Don't tell me they are fighting for my freedom, because in my opinion that is pure garbage! The war was sold to the American people with lies and propaganda. Even among the right-wing there are few who will now deny that the invasions and occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan have had much more to with energy resources and geopolitical strategic posturing than anything else.

There is no justification for the illegal, immoral invasion and occupation of a peaceful country.

State Of The Union Address

During the President's speech tonight I noticed something that surprised me. Although, I always thought that illegal immigration was one of the right-wing's favorite personal peeve's, when the President talked about reforming our county's immigration policy, very few of the Republican attendees stood up to applaude; conversely, nearly all of the Democrat attendees were on their feet clapping immediately. The Republican side of the gallery only grudgingly stood up when the President spoke of ending the war in Iraq: why do Republican's love war so much?

Although it has long been my position that both parties have been ripping off the American public for generations, it has been demonstrated that the Democrat's policies lead to a healthier economy and a freer society. It is clear that the right-wing's bottom line is always profits; they appear to be against anything that might threaten corporate profits.

The President's speech was strong and well delivered; he made a lot of sense. By contrast the Republican rebuttal was weak: The Republican's complain a lot about the President's ideas, but they always seem to forget that it was their irresponsible fiscal policies that led to the economic disaster the world is now facing.

SUPREME COURT THROWS OUT LIMITS ON CORPORATE CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS

The United States Supreme Court shocked the nation yesterday, when it decided to overturn it's own 1907 decision limiting corporate spending in political elections. This decision essentially puts the United States government securely in the pockets of the biggest corporations in the country!

It may not be a coincidence that the Court has done this at a time when corporate oversight is more crucial than ever: Health care reform is big in the public's mind and it is no secret that the insurance and drug companies have a lot to lose; Wall Street has been asked to return the money that our "government" gave them just before Bush left office, and they have given most of it away already in executive bonuses; also, it is imperative that we take action globally to prevent the pollution that has led to global warming and could possibly destroy human life on Earth.

With the Supreme Court's latest ruling, any efforts to curb harmful corporate activities can easily be squashed by corporations that feel such efforts will interfere with their profits. Elections will be decided by corporations, who will install whatever politicians best favor their interests.

Democracy in this country is now only a dim memory, if it ever really existed at all...

After reading books such as George Orwell's, 1984, or Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, and seeing movies with the same general message like Brazil, THX-1138, Wag The Dog, etc., I have had little trust in the mainstream sources for world news. Accordingly, I spend a lot of time looking for alternative information sources whenever I am trying to find the truth on global political matters.

The PAK-ALERT PRESS stands out as an excellent source for independant stories and articles out of the Middle- East and especially with respect to the situation in the region of Afghanistan and Pakistan. The photos and stories that I find there, give a realistic perspective to the stark reality of a distant war that most Americans are insulated from by our sterile and impotent media giants.

Life begins at forty I have heard, but I could be mistaken. Maybe it was "life begins at fired". Both these occurred within about three weeks of each other so my actual delivery date is ambiguous. As far as work is concerned, I can't say I'm really "missing" it. I graduated with a romantic desire to work in some new green technology. My enthusiasm collided with a faltering economy and I ended up working for a Dutch software company writing code to simulate oil field production. OK, I did it for the money. Somewhere between graduating and the job that would kill my passion, someone told me that true responsibility lied in a steady paycheck, health insurance (see Flu as a pre-existing condition), and giving up my bicycle as transportation for a car. I became a proper consuming, polluting, and productive member of society. This is what happens when you do not follow your muse.
First, what exactly is your muse? What they don't tell you is that there are more than one. There are, in fact, nine muses according to the Greeks or Romans. Your choices range from Calliope (epic poetry) to Melpomene (tragedy) and variations in-between possibly involving dancing or playing the flute. I believe we could create more modern versions of these muses such as: Blogonia (politics), Yogaerpe (holistic health), or Ployspamnia (web development). We may even create hybrid muses for specific interests, such as: Thaliablogonia (political humor). One kind of muse you will not find is one centered around social stability or the pursuit of money which brings me back to my last employment.
My boss decided to task me with scheduling lunch hour lectures. My co-workers grew to hate me as my task turned into cajoling them into standing in front of the entire company and talking instead of eating. The upshot was we could talk about anything we wanted with special butt kissing points awarded to anyone who could make our miserable job look exciting. My own lecture was on the compelling topic of "peak oil". For those who are unaware of what this means, it's when the easy oil is taped out and the remaining oil fields become economically unfeasible to develop (think tar sands). The term develop is actually a misnomer. oil is not developed but removed from the ground and replaced with seawater, but developed sounds more creative and innovative. The United States hit peak oil back in the mid seventies. That's why we import so much now. Anyhow, my lecture, complete with graphs and figures, comes to an end and all I see are stunned co-workers and supervisors. "So what you are saying Charley is we are in a dying business?" I hate to give happy go lucky geeks bad news but I thought it might be important. To the main boss this was almost treason. Lectures were meant to raise moral, rally the troops, and to develop a sense of guilt and servitude toward the company. Whatever reason my boss had for terminating my contract doesn't really matter. The point is that I am free. I can only blame myself if I get into another working situation that drains the hemoglobin from my vitals. I might do better becoming a carbon neutral street performer or following the muse of Ecobuskina .

World War III

How does one make a distinction between "occupation" and "invasion"? It should be obvious right? Most would immediately say that an occupation is temporary and an invasion permanent. But, let us look more closely at these words.

My Encarta Dictionary tells me that the first definition of "occupation" is "1. the job by which somebody earns a living." That makes sense when I think about what the United States is doing in the Middle-East. But wait, we're talking about a military action, right? The traditional military use of the word "occupation" according to Encarta, is "4. MILITARY the invasion and control of a country or area by enemy forces." Hhmmn, there is nothing there about leaving the invaded country...

The order by which Encarta lists the definitions for any given word are supposed to be representative of the commonality of their usage, so I was not surprised when I looked up "invasion" to find that the first definition was perfectly military in its application, "1. a hostile entry by an armed force into a country's territory, especially with the intention of conquering it." Again, there is nothing here about leaving the invaded country. I like this word better for a description of what our country has done in the Middle-East; there is no deception with this word.

Of course our troops in the Middle-East are planning to leave...just as soon as they are done building a few more permanent military bases. Just like in Viet Nam, our presence there will eventually change the culture into a more "American friendly" place to be. The US military never had a plan for "leaving" Iraq, because that is not what an "invasion" is all about.

Let us use words that convey the true meaning of our actions in the Middle-East when we talk about our "enterprises" there. And let us not pretend that we are conducting "police actions" or "occupations"--this is not a "war on terror." We are in the middle of nothing less than World War III! How many nations are involved in this global power struggle? I think they all are...

Apparently, after some hemming and hawing the Israeli government has finally admitted to stealing organs from the corpses of dead Palestinians. Why is this not surprising to me? The Israeli government has committed countless war crimes against the Palestinians, and they show no signs of changing their ways. Wedding Photographer Ordered to Pay Same Sex Couple

It appears that the photographer, a Christian, felt that it was against her religious beliefs to photograph a same sex couple who later brought a civil suit against her for discrimination based on sexual orientation. The Taos judge agreed and ordered the photographer to pay the couple $6,600+. The case is on appeal, of course.

Let Us Remember The Heroes

Do you recognize this man? Most will say he looks vaguely familiar, and he should...in my opinion, this is the greatest hero of the war in Iraq. This man had the courage and the fortitude to stand up and say what he believed in, in spite of the swift and brutal retaliation that he knew he would receive for doing so. This is the famous Shoe Throwing Reporter, Muntadhar al-Zeidi. He had the nerve to throw both of his shoes at Former President Bush in a show of disgust for the lies and propaganda spread by the Bush administration. He endured nine months of torture in an Iraqi prison for his act of defiance, and was released last September.

After his release, al-Zeidi said that he believes US forces "...will spare no efforts to track me as an insurgent revolutionary in a bid to kill me..." He has since gone into hiding with his family.

Number of "Unemployed" Americans Much Higher Than Reported

Conservatives Still Deny Global Warming

I could be paddling a rowboat down Market Street in San Francisco after the poles have melted, and there will still be conservative fanatics who deny that humans are responsible for Global Warming or that it is even real.

Why this stubborn refusal to acknowledge the most respected scientists on the planet in favor of studies funded by lobbyists and political organizations with obvious ties to corporate interests? I see four possible reasons:

1. They believe it, but don't care: These people are so attached to the wealth created by their surreptitious business holdings that they are incapable of concern for their less fortunate peers, other species, or future generations of humans. This would be very disturbing, because it would mean that a huge portion of our population is actually evil.

2. They are simply to afraid to face the truth: Like ostriches who hide their heads in the sand when there is danger present, their fear doesn't allow them to admit their impending doom.

3. They are racked with guilt: Perhaps they just cannot face the guilt associated with their participation in the destruction of thousands of species of plants and animals; the possible extermination of the human race (or at least our civilization); and the destruction of an ecosystem which is the legacy of every person alive as well as those not yet born.

4. They are just ignorant: This is not very likely, but maybe they simply lack the intellect required to process the information available and come to the obvious conclusion that most intelligent people came to, back in the early seventies.

Such foolishness reminds me of the catholic church's pathetic attempts at stifling any theories that threatened their geocentric model of the universe. Whatever the reason for this self induced ignorance, we must try to educate them of the truth however difficult that may seem. The next time you hear some uneducated hick exclaim, "Global Warming? What global warming? This was the coldest winter I can remember, so how can the planet be warming up?" or, "These are just natural fluctuations in the Earth's climate." Please speak up and explain to them that only religious fanatics who cling to the notion of creationism and a flat Earth still doubt the unfortunate reality of global warming.

I liken our current situation to that faced by the inhabitants of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) before western explorers arrived to find them eating each other just to stay alive. The island was rich in resources, but its superstitious inhabitants squandered those resources trying to outdo each other by carving and erecting enormous stone monoliths which were meant to bring luck to their individual clans. Had they used those resources to build ships instead of statues, their culture may have survived and even flourished. Earth is also a remote island with finite resources. Our skyscrapers are our monoliths, our nations are our clans. If we don't stop our petty clan squabbles and get busy building space ships and space colonies, we may lose the opportunity altogether. Humanity may revert to an agrarian society only to be wiped out eventually when the Sun or a nearby star goes supernova; we are struck by an asteroid; or some other global catastrophe wipes us out. We cannot continue to allow the greedy, ignorant, and/or incompetent to exploit and squander the Earth's resources, which are the legacy of all life on Earth.

Obama Seeks to Continue Federal Wiretapping Under Patriot Act

Even though President Obama voted to reauthorize the Patriot Act as a senator in 2006, he was opposed to provisions in the Patriot Act granting the FBI (and other law enforcement and intelligence agencies) powers for warrantless surveillance. Critics say that such provisions in the Patriot Act have the effect of nullifying certain rights guaranteed to US citizens under the Constitution of the United States (most notably the right to privacy). Now, as President, Obama seeks to continue those provisions which he himself voted against less than four years ago. Obama even goes further by taking the position that the Federal Government is immune to lawsuits stemming from warrantless wiretapping. We need to tell our Democratic leaders that there is not enough of a difference between them and their Republican counterparts. A government spying on its own citizens is the first sign of a fascist state. It is time to drop the draconian Patriot Act and restore the Bill of Rights. Let your government representatives know that you are in favor of restoring freedom and democracy by repealing the Patriot Act: Send them a letter now!

In a 2006 study, the World Institute for Development Economics Research of the United Nations University(UNI-WIDER)reported that more than half of the world's wealth is in the hands of only 2% of its population, while the poorest half of the world's population owns less than 1% of the world's wealth. The study was based on data obtained from 2000, so it is likely that these numbers changed significantly during the Bush era.

Meanwhile, the US government decides to give hundreds of billions of dollars to the lending industry, even though both the Democrats and Republicans said they and their constituents were against doing so. It's not hard to see who they are really working for is it?

There is not enough difference between the Democrats and Republicans. Both parties have been ripping off the general public, since way before I was born.
Because I lived in very blue voting district during the last presidential election, for the first time in my life I had the luxury of "voting my conscience," instead of voting for "the lesser of two evils."
I voted for the Green Party candidate...not because I thought she would make a great president, but because I really agree with the Green Party agenda, and I wanted to send a message to the Democrats.
I agree that Obama was a better choice than McCain, but only by a small margin. The thing that worried me about Obama right from the beginning was his warlike and hawkish attitudes. We need to stop giving money to the military, and Obama never talked about that.

This country was built with the pioneering spirit; when the first colonists were coming to America in the 17th and 18th centuries, it was a dangerous and frightening enterprise. Most of these migrants just wanted a better life for themselves and their children. Europe at that time was like a pie that had already been sliced up. You were either a land owner or a renter, and if you were the latter, the chances of ever owning your own land were very slim. Once society gets to this point, the lower classes start to become restless; these are the people most likely to take the risks associated with the crossing of an ocean into the unknown, where they might find their own slice of pie. Today we are again in a situation where the pie has been sliced up: But this time there is nowhere left to go but upwards.

I have always been interested in the exploration and exploitation of space. Clearly, it is only a matter of time before the earth becomes uninhabitable, so we will have to colonize space someday anyway. Even if the Earth is spared from collision with a comet or asteroid; even if we don’t destroy ourselves with pollution; even if we are not wiped out by a super-volcano; the grim reality exists that in order to survive as a race we must eventually leave this planet.

I believe that the colonization of space will lighten the load on the resources of Mother Earth in many ways. It would also serve to help perpetuate our species. Many people I have spoken to regarding space colonization are against it. One of the things they always bring up is that they feel we should learn to take care of our own planet before we go mucking about with the rest of our celestial neighbors. If feel that this argument is both nearsighted and unrealistic: space in our neighboring area is already a radioactive wasteland; there are no developed life forms that we know of in our solar system which might be damaged. Also, when we begin to colonize our neighboring planets or their satellites, we will bring the seeds of the Mother Earth with us, planting and propagating trees, vegetables, and herbs. We will bring with us animals, both domestic and wild. In Mars’ case, the very real possibility exists that we could cultivate the Martian atmosphere through the introduction of chlorofluorocarbons, and oxygen producing plants. In short, we could bring life and beauty to what were once empty and desolate worlds. Of course, a time could come when we are able to travel to nearby stars, and there we may find worlds already teeming with rich and diverse eco-systems: But we won’t have to use their resources for agriculture, mining, hunting, or animal husbandry. We will have the ability to manufacture anything we need, utilizing the unlimited energy we can generate from the safe use of nuclear power in space, and the limitless materials available in the heavens.

Nuclear energy production on Earth is, of course, a terribly dangerous endeavor; the toxic radioactive matter generated cannot be disposed of safely. In space however, nuclear waste could easily be deposited into the Sun, or shot out into the limitless empty space between galaxies. The argument that sending parcels of radioactive waste into the Sun would damage it are ridiculous; the Sun is nothing itself but a giant glob of thermo-nuclear explosions, since the Sun’s diameter is over 244 times that of the Earth the trivial amounts of material that we would be adding to it would have no more effect than the many objects that fall into it every day. Further, in his book The Sun Shines Bright, Isaac Asimov tells us that the Sun loses 4,200,000,000 kilograms of mass every second. There are 31,557,000 seconds in a year, so the Sun will eventually burn up the fuel it has and turn into a red giant; when that happens it will expand to engulf the inner-most planets, including Earth. Unfortunately, we might not have that much time anyway. In Target Earth, Jon Erickson says that the Earth has collided with asteroid and comets many times in the past. “On October 30, 137, the asteroid Hermes shot past Earth at an estimated speed of 22,000 miles per hour…” it was a mile wide and missed us by about 500,000 miles. If it had hit us, it would have generated an explosion equivalent to “100,000 on one-megaton hydrogen bombs,” more explosive force than all the nuclear weapons in the world. Hathor, Oct. 21, 1976, 1988 TA, Sep. 29, and on Mar. 22, 1989 FC, all are asteroids that have narrowly missed striking the Earth. In the event of some global catastrophe, our space colonies could help us by sending us “good packages” from the sky.

The raw materials available in space are limitless; in the The High Road, by Ben Bova, he tells us “we live in a solar system that is incredibly rich in raw materials. More wealth than any emperor could dream of is available for every human being alive in interplanetary space” (75). Just the asteroid belt between the Earth and Mars contains enough raw materials to keep legions of miners busy for centuries. In Spaceships of the Mind, by Nigel Calder, we read “A cubic kilometer of asteroidal material, which might be recovered from a single asteroid, will provide 6900 million tons of iron, 800 million tons of nickel, 40 million tons of cobalt and 8 million tons of copper” (77). With these resources the construction of spaceships, giant orbiting greenhouses, and factories capable of sustaining entire cities on Earth (as well as themselves) would be possible. Additional materials could be found on the Moon, Mars or other satelites. No longer would we have to plunder our own planet for the needs of our race: Instead whatever we needed could be sent to us from the heavens; great packages of food, Medicine, clothing, and building materials could be delivered anywhere on the planet within a few hours notice. It would no longer be necessary to destroy thousands of square miles of rain forest to grow coffee, rubber, and beef. No longer would we have to use our precious supply of fossil fuels to ship these products halfway around the planet: Roads would be used only for the transport of people. The cost would be negligible.

The greatest expense in space flight is escaping the Earth’s gravity well: once in the gentle arms of zero gravity, moving about from one place to another is fairly easy. We now know that the Moon has a considerable amount of water around its polar regions; water can be divided into oxygen and hydrogen, the fuels we need to propel our spacecraft. A colony on the Moon is now not only feasible, but it would pay for itself in a few short decades; we could build factories on the Moon. The lunar gravity is only one sixth that of Earth’s, making the delivery of goods from the moon fairly economical.

Other economic benefits could come from the tourist industry that would develop; souvenirs from space have great value to Earthlings already. Hotels restaurants and adventure packages could bring in billions of dollars. The creation of a new culture would occur; the “Spacers” as we might call them, would have their own dialect. They would develop their own traditions and new customs.

Some say we should learn to control our population in order to preserve our resources: I say let’s make more room for more people. Many of the products we now use on a daily basis are products of the space program; nylon clothing, gore-tex fabric, electronic transistors, and catalytic converters are just a few examples of the rewards we have already seen. Technology serves to increase the wealth of each and every person: Yes, technology is a double edged sword; but a sword with to edges can be a valuable tool when wielded with responsibility and compassion.

In order to pay for Bush and Cheney's illegal and immoral war, the United States borrowed trillions of dollars from the industrialized nations of the world (most notably, China). In essence, China (and the other industrialized nations) now own most of the United States' assets.

Thanks to neo-conservative policies the world's economy is in ruins; the reputation of the US has been seriously damaged all over the world (especially in Muslim nations); millions of US citizens are out of work; millions of innocent people are dead and things may still get worse before they get better. Now conservatives are complaining that President Obama hasn't "fixed the economy" yet!

I hate to say it, but it will take more than six-months to fix the mess the conservatives have created since Bush took office nearly nine years ago. To those critics of Obama, I say this: You had your chance and you were wrong. Now shut the hell up, while we try to clean up your mess.

Iraqis Celebrate US Troop Withdrawal

The news media has been so focused on the death of Michael Jackson that people in the United States may not have noticed that US troops withdrew from Iraqi cities today.

The Iraqi people noticed though, and they have been celebrating the event with great joy. In an article from the Associated Press, one Iraqi man, Waleed al-Bahadili, is reported to have said "All of us are happy _ Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds on this day....the Americans harmed and insulted us too much." One Iraqi woman said that she "...finally feel[s] liberated."

A flagrant violation of international law, the invasion and occupation of Iraq has lasted over six years. It has destabilized the entire middle-east; caused the needless deaths of thousands (some say millions) of innocent Iraqi civilians, and seriously damaged the reputation of the United States all over the world; it has cost the US taxpayers trillions of dollars and destroyed the United State's (and the world's) economy.

The pullout is mostly symbolic, as some US troops will remain in the cities to "...train and advise Iraqi forces...," while the vast majority of them will be conducting operations from their newly built permanant military bases, outside of the cities.

Coincidental to the pullout, Iraq's oil interests were placed on the world market, allowing international investors to buy shares of Iraqi oil.

Obama Takes Out Fly With Stunning Ninja Speed!

During an interview President Obama was being harrassed by a fly. At first he tried to bat it away, but the persistant fly kept hassling him while he was trying to make a point. Finally, he focused his gaze on the offensive insect, and with a quick motion knocked the little sucker out cold. A camera man filming the interview was actually able to get a clear shot of the stunned insect on the carpet. At first, animal rights activists protested, but the attorney general said the President was acting in self defense. The fly was later executed for its viscious attack on our fearless leader.

There is a big difference between what this guy is enduring and what a suspected "terrorist" would be enduring, because he had the option of ending the experiment at any time. The person being "interrogated" doesn't have the ability to stop the procedure and therefore is enduring an excruciating experience that can and has led to death.

Iraqis Mark Sixth Anniversary of Invasion With Protests

Watching the news this morning I noticed that there was little to no mention of the thousands of Iraqis who turned out to protest the invasion and continued occupation of their country.

Even internet searches fail to produce results for the protest, which dwarfed the handful of paid protesters that were filmed pulling down Saddam Hussien's statue with the aid of US soldiers after the sacking of Baghdad in 2003. There are few people who don't remember the video footage of that event, which was aired over and over again.

The failure of the US media to report on today's protest is reprehensible. In fact there has been very little mention of Iraq in the news lately. Meanwhile, US military spending continues to increase, despite the soaring national debt which has resulted from the illegal and immoral war in the middle east.

With some difficulty, I did manage to find this article on the protest.

Bush Administration Tortures and Kills Whales

It has always been my position that the Bush administration and the Republican party in general are enemies of environmental protection and the protection of human rights. I have been citing a lot of articles in the San Francisco Chronicle lately, and there were a couple I noticed today which support my position.

As if we didn't already know it, the Senate Armed Services Committee has confirmed that the Bush administration has been in favor of and encouraged the torture of political and war detainees (prisoners) in contravention of international law and the Geneva Convention.

Also, only six weeks before leaving office, Bush and his gang of war criminals are also doing everything they can to ease restrictions designed to protect endangered species in favor of big business and the oil industry. Is anyone surprised? This kind of thing is consistant with the activities Republican politicians all over the country and at all levels of government.

Nuclear Power

Recently, I have heard a lot of conservatives talking about how "safe" nuclear power is. Is it possible that they don't remember the nuclear-meltdown that is still affecting the Town of Chernobyl? They don't remember the Three-Mile Island debacle? Can it be that the never head about what happened in Japan a number of years back? Nuclear power is not safe. It has never been, and never will be safe to use on Earth.

However, nuclear power could be safely generated in space. Space is already radioactive, so there would be no harm from the radioactive by-products that result from generating nuclear power in space. Nuclear waste could be fired out of the solar-system or into the Sun, and it wouldn't hurt anybody. The energy generated could then be be transmitted to a receiving station on Earth, via microwave.

The Three Mile Island accident affirmed how well the western world designs and builds their nuclear power plants. Even in a worst case accident, US reactors' containment and other design enhancements will protect the public. If Russia (or Ukraine) built an inferior naval ship, we would conclude that America can build better ships. However with nuclear power, people want to lump all nuclear power globally together, when there are different standards in the western world. All of the used nuclear fuel produced in the united states in the past 40 years (that has provided 20 percent of our nations electricity) could be placed in an area the size of a football field and would only be seven stories high. Critics of nuclear power often cite the weight of the used fuel instead of the volume, because weight sounds worse than volume. Used fuel is made of some of the heaviest metals known to man. Fossil fueled plants do not have to pay for what they emit. Nuclear power has no emissions from the generating unit. In fact it only has small amounts of emissions from fossil fueled generators on site that are run periodically for a few hours for testing, but their only operational purpose and use is for emergency support of the plants safety systems.
Scottdavene, not only is space radioactive, radioactivity is all around you. Everything has a certain level of natural radioactivity. Though we can communicate using a wireless medium, we can not efficiently transfer energy through wireless means. Transmitters and receivers employ an external power supply to allow signal processing to occur.
It is unfortunate that nuclear power has not been more widely used globally, because it's benefits to mankind are overwhelming. Nuclear proliferation is a large concern, but we need to own that risk and manage it, not treat nuclear power as unnatural. We have the capability to produce proliferation resistant fuel and sell it to developing nations, so that they can benefit from the peaceful uses of nuclear power without acquiring the deadly capability to produce nuclear weapons. There is a wealth of technical knowledge and ideas behind nuclear power, just waiting for the people to become educated enough to allow and promote its growth. Nuclear power plants have a large upfront cost to build, but once they are online they drive older fossil fueled plants offline that are significantly more expensive to operate than a nuclear power plant. Our environment deserves the best source of energy that money can buy, and nuclear power is the only emission free source that can offer that on a large (baseload) scale. Nuclear power plants are almost always producing 100 percent power, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Never mind the very real possibility of a nuclear meltdown which you brush a side so casually, you have not addressed the problem of how we dispose of the deadly nuclear waste that your power plants will produce. Further, you pretend that you can accommodate or nullify any nuclear disaster, and fail to realize that a similar disaster in any other country would be just as deadly to the entire planet, regardless of where it occurs.

I for one have contacted my representatives to express my concern and disgust at what appears to be a last minute attempt to to sway undecided stupid Americans to vote for McCain....at the cost of the lives of innocent people.

It's shameful.

Of course the WTC victims were killed by BUSH and McCain.
Obama wants to attack Pakistan unilaterally and you have no problem with that.

I think he said if 'we have actionable intelligence'. He also said he would enter into discussions before he would use military action. And besides, that wasn't the point. The point was using military action to further his pathetic struggling campaign.

No, I do not prescribe to the Zeitgeist theory of the WTC, but I will be a prouder American if Mr. Obama is elected. You strike me as someone who ran out and put a flag on their pick up truck 3 days after the attacks on the World Trade Center.
